How the BMW iX xDrive50 Range Calculator Works
The BMW iX xDrive50 is rated at 630 km WLTP, built on a large 111.5 kWh battery (around 105 kWh usable) and a rated efficiency of 17.7 kWh/100 km. The standard heat pump softens the hit by reusing waste heat instead of relying purely on a resistive heater. Where the iX excels in winter is composure and traction: xDrive all-wheel drive shifts torque continuously, and the car's substantial weight gives it a planted, stable feel on cold roads. The huge battery is the real winter advantage - even with a meaningful cold-weather penalty, the absolute range left over is comfortably high for everyday use and most weekend trips.

City driving holds up better than the motorway because lower speeds cut aerodynamic losses and offer more regeneration. Gentle town use can edge higher thanks to regeneration, while sustained motorway cruising is where the number falls. A confident everyday expectation in spring and autumn is around 520-560 km - long-legged for a large luxury SUV, helped by the sheer size of the battery.
Working from the iX's rated 17.7 kWh/100 km and roughly 105 kWh usable battery: at a relaxed 100-110 km/h it sits near rated consumption and can approach 560-590 km; at 130 km/h consumption rises to roughly 24-27 kWh/100 km, which translates to about 390-440 km. These are engineering estimates derived from the published efficiency and battery size rather than a single test, so treat them as planning guidance. A loaded SUV with passengers, luggage and a roof box will sit toward the higher consumption end.
Several things shape the iX's range. In its favour: a very large battery and a body that is unusually slippery for a tall SUV. Working against it: a high kerb weight, a large frontal area, and an all-wheel-drive system that adds a little parasitic loss. As always, speed dominates - aerodynamic drag rises with the square of velocity, so the gap between 110 and 130 km/h is large for a vehicle this shape. The iX's 200 kW charging is good rather than class-leading, but the huge battery means you simply stop less often.
